Breaking down Shueh-li’s cover of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”

The Youtube video reveals the methods behind producer, Shueh-li Ong’s version of Rod Temperton and Quincy Jone’s hit song.

I remembered the song’s appeal when it first came out; how songwriter, Rod Temperton, and producer, Quincy Jones, had crafted it so marvelously.
I wanted to stay true to that memory while showcasing my methods with foley, sound design, synth/programming and performance, and vocoding.
“Thriller” was also a perfect playground for my Bob Moog customized Etherwave and Epro theremins.

Taking part in the reveal are two of my good friends; Christopher Currell, who worked on MJ’s BAD album+tour and suggested we collaborate on a cover, as well as voice-over veteran, Jeff Bell.

Listen and download the cover song from my BandCamp store.

“When I first heard Shueh-li Ong’s version of the Michael Jackson song Thriller, I had to listen to it several times because the instrumentation was so diverse and striking, I could not get enough. I admit that my personal musical favorite is dancehall and reggae as well as hip hop, so the experience of her music was quite different. Overall, I am impressed with the musicality of Shueh-li’s music and the production value is out of this world. The nuances of her composition drew me in and I heard something new and magical during each listen. When one thinks of the care and detail Michael Jackson put into his music and concert performance, any music critic will have a great appreciation for Shueh-li and her meticulous nature in creating and presenting music. It is refreshing to experience such magic translated into popular music or vice versa! Shueh-li is definitely now on my radar.” Jerry Doby, Executive Editor of Hype Magazine.

“This is my favorite kind of cover — not a redundant retread, nor a jarring mess, but a new take that captures the essence of the original, but comes at it from a different direction. I thought I knew what to expect, but you allowed me to hear a fresh Thriller. Very nicely done, thank you!” Soundcloud comment from Bucmo.
